Mary was born in May 1796.  Mary's father was Henry Behenna and her mother was Mary Creago.  Her paternal grandparents were Ferdinando Behenna and Mary Skewes. She had four brothers and four sisters, named William, Henry, Ferdinando, John, Nancy, Betsy, Nancy and Elizabeth.  She was the third oldest of the nine children.
