James was born in March 1803.  James' father was Ferdinando Behenna and his mother was Ann Tregaskis.  His paternal grandparents were Ferdinando Behenna and Mary Skewes. He had a brother and three sisters, named Henry, Mary, Ann and Jane.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
