Thomas was born in 1856.  Thomas' father was Robert Rushton and his mother was Hannah Ickeringill.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Ickeringill and Sarah Longbottom. He had three brothers and two sisters, named William, Robert, John, Sarah and Hannah.  He was the oldest of the six children.
