Allan was born in 1835.  Allan's father was Archibald MacDonald and his mother was Flora Kennedy.  His paternal grandparents were John MacDonald and Flora MacDonald; his maternal grandparents are Allan Kennedy and Flora MacDougal.  He had two brothers and a sister, named Malcolm, Charles and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the four children.  He died at the age of 45 in 1880.
