Mary was born in 1837.  Mary's father was Archibald MacDonald and her mother was Flora Kennedy.  Her paternal grandparents were John MacDonald and Flora MacDonald; her maternal grandparents are Allan Kennedy and Flora MacDougal.  She had three brothers named Malcolm, Allan and Charles.  She was the third oldest of the four children.
