Allan was born in 1881.  Allan's father was Malcolm MacDonald and his mother was Margaret McKinnon.  His paternal grandparents were Archibald MacDonald and Flora Kennedy; his maternal grandparents were Hugh McKinnon and Margaret MacColl.  He had three brothers and four sisters, named Archibald, Hugh, Malcolm, Flora, Maggie, Flora and Maryann.  He was the sixth oldest of the eight children.  He had a half-sister named Betsy.
