Mary was born in 1877.  Mary's father was Alexander Mowat and her mother was Esther Sinclair.  Her paternal grandparents were John Mowat and Barbara MacKay; her maternal grandfather is Charles Sinclair and her maternal grandmother was Mary Fraser.  She had five brothers and seven sisters, named John, Charles, Alexander, David, Andrew, Barbara, Esther, Janet, Elizabeth, Margaret, Hughina and Christina.  She was the seventh oldest of the thirteen children.
