John was born in 1867.  John's father was Alexander Mowat and his mother was Esther Sinclair.  His paternal grandparents were John Mowat and Barbara MacKay; his maternal grandfather is Charles Sinclair and his maternal grandmother was Mary Fraser.  He had four brothers and eight sisters, named Charles, Alexander, David, Andrew, Barbara, Esther, Mary, Janet, Elizabeth, Margaret, Hughina and Christina.  He was the oldest of the thirteen children.
