William was born in 1845.  William's father is Alexander Matheson and his mother was Margaret Begg.  His paternal grandparents are William Matheson and Isobell Harper; his maternal grandparents were Alexander Begg and Christina Dunnet.  He has three brothers and three sisters, named Alexander, James, David, Christian, Isabella and Margaret.  He is the oldest of the seven children.
