David was born in 1859.  David's father is Alexander Matheson and his mother was Margaret Begg.  His paternal grandparents are William Matheson and Isobell Harper; his maternal grandparents were Alexander Begg and Christina Dunnet.  He has three brothers and three sisters, named William, Alexander, James, Christian, Isabella and Margaret.  He is the youngest of the seven children.
