Christian was born in 1850.  Christian's father is Alexander Matheson and her mother was Margaret Begg.  Her paternal grandparents are William Matheson and Isobell Harper; her maternal grandparents were Alexander Begg and Christina Dunnet.  She has four brothers and two sisters, named William, Alexander, James, David, Isabella and Margaret.  She is the third oldest of the seven children.
