John was born in 1853.  John's father is Peter MacKenzie and his mother is Jane Begg.  His paternal grandparents are Peter MacKenzie and Janet Gow; his maternal grandparents are Peter Begg and Catherine Smith.  He has four brothers and two sisters, named Peter, Andrew, Donald, William, Margaret and Catherine.  He is the oldest of the seven children.
