William was born in 1823.  William's father was Donald MacDonald and his mother is Hannah Russell.  His paternal grandparents were John MacDonald and Flora MacDonald; his maternal grandparents are William Russell and Catherine McLean.  He had three brothers and three sisters, named Archibald, Donald, Malcolm, Mary, Catherine and Flora.  He is the second oldest of the seven children.
