Donald was born in 1827.  Donald's father was Donald MacDonald and his mother is Hannah Russell.  His paternal grandparents were John MacDonald and Flora MacDonald; his maternal grandparents are William Russell and Catherine McLean.  He had three brothers and three sisters, named William, Archibald, Malcolm, Mary, Catherine and Flora.  He is the fourth oldest of the seven children.
