Margaret was born in 1825.  Margaret's father was John Groat and her mother was Elizabeth Mowat.  Her paternal grandparents are John Groat and Elizabeth Sinclair.  She had three brothers and a sister, named George, James, John and Janet.  She is the fourth oldest of the five children.
