Janet was born in 1818.  Janet's father was John Groat and her mother was Elizabeth Mowat.  Her paternal grandparents are John Groat and Elizabeth Sinclair.  She had three brothers and a sister, named George, James, John and Margaret.  She was the second oldest of the five children.
