James was born in 1820.  James' father was John Groat and his mother was Elizabeth Mowat.  His paternal grandparents are John Groat and Elizabeth Sinclair.  He had two brothers and two sisters, named George, John, Janet and Margaret.  He was the third oldest of the five children.
