Robert was born in 1812.  Robert's father was Alexander Begg and his mother was Christina Dunnet.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Begg and Isabella Mathison.  He had two brothers and five sisters, named James, Alexander, Margaret, Isobella, Frances, Jane and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
