Alexander was born in 1823.  Alexander's father was Alexander Begg and his mother was Christina Dunnet.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Begg and Isabella Mathison.  He had two brothers and five sisters, named Robert, James, Margaret, Isobella, Frances, Jane and Elizabeth.  He was the fifth oldest of the eight children.
