James was born in 1818.  James' father was Alexander Begg and his mother was Christina Dunnet.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Begg and Isabella Mathison.  He had two brothers and five sisters, named Robert, Alexander, Margaret, Isobella, Frances, Jane and Elizabeth.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.
