Mary was born in May 1896. Mary's father was James Naseworth Staggs and her mother was Sara Jane Staggs (Staggs). She had four brothers and three sisters, named Sylvester, Calvin, Charley, William, Sarah, Claude and Ada. She was the fourth youngest of the eight children. She had two half-brothers and three half-sisters, named George, Joseph, Sophronia, Winney and Mollie.
