Mary was born in 1914.  Mary's father was Theodore C. Ashley and her mother was Bessie B. Mitchell (Ashley).  Her paternal grandparents were Benjamin F. Ashley and Mary J. McFarland (Ashley). She had two brothers and a sister, named Benjamin, Clarence and Mildred.  She was the oldest of the four children.
