Pieter was born in April 1747 in Amsterdam and his baptism took place on April 9th, 1747 in Amsterdam (Nieuwe Kerk) conducted by Reverend Peiffers.1   His godfather was Pieter van der Bruggen and his godmother was Jannetje Jonkhouwt. Pieter's father was Willem van der Schaaf and his mother was Maria Mulders. He had two brothers and a sister, named Jan Willemszn, Pieter and Grietje.  He was the youngest of the four children.
