Grietje was born in March 1741 in Amsterdam and her baptism took place on March 5th, 1741 in Amsterdam (Westerkerk).1   Her godfather was Willem IJonkhout and her godmother was Grietje IJonkhout. Grietje's father was Willem van der Schaaf and her mother was Maria Mulders. She had three brothers named Jan Willemszn, Pieter and Pieter.  She was the second oldest of the four children.
