Dirk was born in 1801 in Loon op Zand and his baptism took place there on March 1st, 1801.1  Dirk's father was Wouter van der Leij and his mother was Geertruij van Diemen.  His paternal grandparents were Dirk van der Leij and Dingena Hommel; his maternal grandparents were Gerard van Diemen and Jenneke Johanna Timmers. He had a brother and nine sisters, named Gerrit, Dingena, Janneke, Pieternella, Jacomijna, Antonia, Mijna, Geertruy, Doora and Johanna.  He was the tenth oldest of the eleven children.  He died at the age of 65 on February 9th, 1866 in Capelle (Noord Brabant).2
