Teunis was born in 1671 in 's Grevelduin-Capelle and his baptism took place on February 8th, 1671 in Capelle (Noord Brabant).1   His godmother was Anneken Thonisdr. Teunis' father was Govert Janszn Hoevenaar and his mother was Mayken Teunisdr Melen.  His paternal grandparents were Jan Govertszn Hovenaers and Maijken Jansdr; his maternal grandparents were Thonis Dirxs Peterszn Meele and Sijtgen Petersdr Cristiaans. He had two sisters named Ariaentje Govertsdr and Janneken.  He was the second oldest of the three children.
