Spaan was born in July 1783 in Arnhem and his baptism took place there on July 13th, 1783.1  Spaan's father was Sebert Buijng and his mother was Maartje Willemsdr N.N.. He had two brothers and six sisters, named Gerrit Jan, Arend, Dirkje, Catharina, Cornelia, Sibila, Cornelia and Hendrina.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.  He died in an accident or as a result of an injury, verdronken in de Rijn, at the age of 22 on April 27th, 1806 in Arnhem.  The funeral took place on May 24th, 1806 in Arnhem.1 1
