John was born in 1887 in Sheriff Hill, Co Durham.1 John's father was John Farrer and his mother was Ann Waugh. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Farrer and Anne Gibson; his maternal grandparents were William Waugh and Mary Dodd. He had a brother and four sisters, named Thomas, Cecilia, Annie, Mary and Isabella. He was the youngest of the six children.-
