Jacob was born in 1846.  Jacob's father was Joshua Betan (Bittan) and his mother was Phoebe Martin (Nunes Martinez).  His paternal grandparents were Yamin Betan and <Unknown>; his maternal grandparents were Jacob Martin (Nunes Martinez) and Rebecca Emanuel. He had six brothers and five sisters, named Benjamin, Abraham, Samual, Elias, Simha, Solomon, Rebecca, Dinah, Julia, Esther and Sarah.  He was the sixth oldest of the twelve children.  He died at the age of 1 in 1847.
