John Frederick was born on June 12th, 1904.  John Frederick's father was William Jarvis Wharin and his mother was Amelia Phillips.  His paternal grandparents were William Wharin and Mary June Dunn; his maternal grandfather was Frederick E Phillips and his maternal grandmother is Amelia Connors. He had a brother and three sisters, named William Phillips, Amelia Mary, Helen Ridout and Jean Frances.  He was the fourth oldest of the five children.
