Thomas was born in 1892 in Mile End, Middlesex.1   Thomas' father was William Henry Rowley and his mother was Jane Elizabeth Newman. He had two brothers and a sister, named William, James and Annie.  He was the youngest of the four children. He had a half-brother and four half-sisters, named Charles, Jane, Sarah, Emma and Harriet.
