William was born in 1814 in Chedzoy, Somerset.1   William's father was Richard Rainey and his mother was Elizabeth N.  His paternal grandparents were Poss Edmund Rainey and <Unknown>. He had three brothers and two sisters, named John, Edmund, Richard, Elizabeth and Sarah.  He was the oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 87 in September 1901.2
