Richard was born in 1827 in Bridgewater, Somerset.  Richard's father was Richard Rainey and his mother was Elizabeth N.  His paternal grandparents were Poss Edmund Rainey and <Unknown>. He had three brothers and two sisters, named William, John, Edmund, Elizabeth and Sarah.  He was the second youngest of the six children.
