Mary was born on March 7th, 1835 in Thaxted, Essex and her christening took place on July 12th, 1835 in Independent, Thaxted, Essex.1 2   Mary's father was William Martin and her mother was Mary Ann Parkin.  Her maternal grandparents were Samuel Parkin and Ann Johnson. She had a brother and a sister, named Joseph and Lydia.  She was the second oldest of the three children.
