Joseph was born in March 1847 in Thaxted, Essex.1   Joseph's father was William Martin and his mother was Mary Ann Parkin.  His maternal grandparents were Samuel Parkin and Ann Johnson. He had two sisters named Lydia and Mary.  He was the youngest of the three children.
