Mary was born in 1865 in Liverpool, Lancashire.1   Mary's father was William Latham and her mother was Ann Newton.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Latham and Mary Townley. She had six brothers named John, William, Thomas, Alfred, Charles and George.  She was the third oldest of the seven children.
