William was born in 1834 in Levens, Westmoreland.1   William's father was Thomas Latham and his mother was Mary Townley. He had two brothers and a sister, named John, Thomas and Margaret.  He was the second youngest of the four children.  He died at the age of 74 in December 1908 in Liverpool, Lancashire.2
