John was born in 1861 in Liverpool, Lancashire.1   John's father was William Latham and his mother was Ann Newton.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Latham and Mary Townley. He had five brothers and a sister, named William, Thomas, Alfred, Charles, George and Mary.  He was the oldest of the seven children.
