Alfred was born in December 1908.  Alfred's father was William Alfred Horncastle and his mother was Elizabeth Sarah Sheldrake. He had a brother and four sisters, named William, Hannah, Rosetta, Mary and Lusitania.  He was the third youngest of the six children.  He died as a war casualty at the age of 35 in 1943 in Italy.1
