Valerie was born in December 1937 in Southampton, Hampshire.1   Valerie's father was Arthur A F Broomfield and her mother was Hilda E Shotter. She has two brothers and three sisters, named Ernest, Thomas, Olive, Pamela and Linda.  She is the third youngest of the six children. She has a half-brother and a half-sister, named Michael and Patricia.
