Thomas was born in March 1938 in Southampton, Hampshire.1   Thomas' father was Arthur A F Broomfield and his mother was Hilda E Shotter. He has a brother and four sisters, named Ernest, Olive, Pamela, Valerie and Linda.  He is the second youngest of the six children. He has a half-brother and a half-sister, named Michael and Patricia.
