Ernest was born in September 1936 in Southampton, Hampshire.1   Ernest's father was Arthur A F Broomfield and his mother was Hilda E Shotter. He has a brother and four sisters, named Thomas, Olive, Pamela, Valerie and Linda.  He is the third oldest of the six children. He has a half-brother and a half-sister, named Michael and Patricia.
