Jane was born in 1847 in Old Stratford, Stratford-Upon-Avon, Warwickshire.¹ Jane's father was Samuel DUFFIN and her mother was Martha CALLAWAY. Her paternal grandparents were John DUFFIN and Mary ROBBINS . She had five brothers and two sisters, named John, Thomas, George, Samuel, William, Eliza and Mary. She was the second oldest of the eight children.
