Thomas was born about 1814 in Rolvenden, Kent, U.K..  Thomas' father was James Austen and his mother was Mary Drury.  His paternal grandparents were John Austen and Jane Sawyer; his maternal grandparents are <Unknown> and <Unknown>. He had a brother and three sisters, named Ambrose, Maria, Eliza and Harriett.  He was the oldest of the five children.
