Nelly was born on February 26th, 1928 in Maldegem.  Nelly's father was Alfons Dheuninck and her mother was Rachel Bourgonjon.  Her paternal grandparents were Henricus Dheuninck and Amelie Dauwels. She had a brother and a sister, named Lucien and Erna.  She is the second oldest of the three children.
