Martha was born about 1854 in Old Brompton Kent. Martha's father was James Walker (Cowkeeper-Carman - Stableman) and her mother was Harriett Light. Her paternal grandparents were John Walker (Sail Maker) and Elizabeth White; her maternal grandparents were William Light (Blacksmith) and Mary Elizabeth. She had four brothers and a sister, named George, James, Henry, William and Mary. She was the third youngest of the six children.
