William was born about December 1875 in St Pancras Middlesex.1   William's father was William Sapshead (Coachman) and his mother was Emma Head (of Shoreditch).  His paternal grandparents were James Sapshead (Livery Stable Keeper) and Mary Page (Potters Bar); his maternal grandparents were George Head (Gen Dealer-Green Grocer) and Ann. He had a brother and eight sisters, named Frederick, Emma, Ada, Louisa, Nelly, Sophia, Minnie, Alice and Rose.  He was the fifth oldest of the ten children.
