William was born in 1869 in Eastbourne Sussex.  William's father was Alfred Pollard (Waiter) and his mother was Martha (Laundress).  His paternal grandparents were James Pollard (net maker Fisherman) and Jane Malpas. He had a brother and three sisters, named Alfred, Martha, Constance and Gertrude.  He was the third oldest of the five children.
