Alfred was born in 1863 in Barking Essex.  Alfred's father was Alfred Pollard (Waiter) and his mother was Martha (Laundress).  His paternal grandparents were James Pollard (net maker Fisherman) and Jane Malpas. He had a brother and three sisters, named William, Martha, Constance and Gertrude.  He was the oldest of the five children.
