Richard was born on July 23rd, 1836 in Merstham Surrey.1   Richard's father was Edward born Merstham Surrey Bennett (Bricklayer then Inn Keeper) and his mother was Sarah Tulett (of Crawley Sussex).  His paternal grandfather was Bennett and his paternal grandmother is <Unknown>; his maternal grandparents are <Unknown> and <Unknown>. He had four brothers and six sisters, named Edward, Henry, John, William, Jane, Sarah, Maria, Mary, Louisa and Caroline.  He was the third youngest of the eleven children.

Richard and Jemina were married in a religious ceremony on June 18th, 1867.
